Just some random factoids about the Enron accounting scandal of 2002,
- Former CEO, Jeffery Skilling, who is now serving a prison
sentence, once described Enron as "doing God's work".
More recently, Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs used the
exact same phrase to defend his firm against accusations of wrong-doing
in the 2008 financial crisis.
I wonder...
- Founder and former chairman of Enron, Ken Lay, who
is now deceased (before he could serve his prison term), got his PhD
because his mentor helped him pull strings during the Vietnam War
so that he served as a staff officer in the Pentagon instead of on board a ship.
This later allowed him to write his econs dissertation on how defence
spending affects the economy.
Just another reminder of how the world works...
Perhaps we should be thankful that mere mortals like us
are not tasked with "doing God's work" and don't have
influential people to pull strings for us. Maybe it would help
us stay out of trouble. I guess it's a case of the higher
you climb, the harder you fall.
